WHAT IS PASSION PROJECT ?

What would you do if you lost your job tomorrow?

You think that is not possible. Think again .

Thousands lost their jobs suddenly overnight during the pandemic. No warning.

One of my colleagues from the first company I worked at connected with me , he was looking for a job , he was desperate , months had passed with no income and bills needed to be paid.

His wife was seriously sick , he did not even have a Mediclaim and medical bills added to his misery.

On the other spectrum I have heard the term repeated ‘Thank God it is Friday’. Employees postponing their lives to the weekend and the next vacation.

This got me thinking, something is wrong in the way we work and plan our careers.

Why would anyone want to trade life to pay the bills ? And yet find themselves suddenly stranded without the means to pay the bills.

I have been blogging on #passionproject for a while now .

In this blog I will answer why I feel this topic is urgent and why this blog.

#passionproject is URGENT because I see everyone is going to be impacted.

Everyone.

It is about emerging of a new world and the way of work and living.

It is not the future but it is happening now at this very moment.

The rules of the new game are that those who play for survival will have the greatest threat to their survival.

Skills that can be defined will be replaced !

They will be replaced by someone or something cheaper somewhere in the world.

Distance will not matter , the work can go anywhere, remote working is no longer a buzz word .

Not just change but speed of change will add to uncertainty in careers and jobs.

Technology developments will cause disruptions.

Entire industries will vanish overnight, a business can get wiped out in no time.

Jobs can be lost suddenly , there will be zero security , not that there was any earlier.

Adapting , innovating and taking risks will be the only way to thrive in the new world.

What worked yesterday will not necessarily work today and definitely not in the future.

Q: So is there anything that is going to be constant and in demand ?

Ans : Yes and the term I use is ‘Passionate Artists’

Passion for what you do as a quality will never fade away.

The world needs passionate individuals ,teams and leaders.

The future is for those who follow their passion and make their work a piece of art.

Art and artists at work will always be in demand because they cannot be replaced by someone or something cheaper.

Artists do not follow the crowd , they create their own art , their life is devoted to mastering their art .

Their art is valued because of the value it brings to the world .

They will never go out of fashion as they are not defined , they are not boxed and they don’t draw boundaries.

They don’t guard territories.

Passionate individuals stand out from the crowd because they are like none , they don’t hide in the crowd , they stand out.

They will challenge the status quo. They will rock the boat.

Passion project is my small attempt to inspire those that have forgotten their dreams , their passion, their art .

By not taking the risk now , by not stepping up to their possibilities, their individuality they are risking their future.

By being in comfort zones , they risk survival. There are no comfort zones any longer.

I see an urgency because those who burry their dream to survive are hurting.

I have seen friends and colleagues lose their jobs some struggle to survive and yet bills need to be paid . They are up the wall.

Passion project is also a soul journey for me to meet passionate people and discover and live my truth.

We all know this , each individual has a gift and it is unique.

Fear of the future and bills that need to be paid holds them back from living fully.

Comfort zones are cozy.

There is urgency also because the time we have on the planet is limited and no point of dying with your song yet in your heart , with regrets of not having lived.

Passion project is a message to discover and live your passion whatever that maybe.

And it is not about money or success or fame . Those are incidental.

The measures of success we have defined as a society are broken .

Living fully in ‘this momentum’ , NOW is all that is to life.

Doing something you ‘hate’ or living for the ‘paycheque’ is not in alignment with why we are here on this planet.

We are here to share our unique gifts with the world.

Also it is not about a goal . It is about the journey. It is about each day , each moment.

It is about being and living authentic life not a projection of others or the society.

It is about living your possibilities fully . It is about singing your song .

Ultimately it is about freedom to choose and living life on our own terms .

Passion project is a urgent call to be more alive , Free , NOW !

DROP YOUR AGENDA TO FULFIL YOUR AGENDA!

I have been reflecting on the subject ‘What is the concept of business and why does all commerce exist ?”.

If we look around most of the time of the human race in the world as we see today revolves around the idea of ‘Money’ .

‘Money’ is central to everything, things we can buy , things we can experience, status , power even health services we can access with money.

Either you are a seller or you are a buyer as an individual or as a collective called the organisation.

Employees sell their time and expertise to organisations , organisations sell services , expertise or products to the masses .

Central to every transaction is “Exchange’ and if we dig deeper there is the concept ‘Perceived Value’.

When you dig deeper there you find there is ‘Agenda’ . “Why do we do anything?” . Every human being at any given point has an agenda.

Why do you do a job , why do you run a business, why do your customers buy . There is an agenda .

The agenda is always about ‘Me’ , break it down people are interested in ‘Self’ . No one is interested in the ‘other’ .

This is an interesting contradiction, all the while when any exchange is happening there are two parties and there is an ‘Agenda’ .

Even every noble cause has an Agenda , religion also has an Agenda.

‘Getting’ and Giving’ are two sides of the agenda . And there is fair exchange.

Agenda of Individuals

1. Survive : pay the bills , stay healthy

2. Thrive : fulfil desires

3. Fame : Get recognised and liked

4. Belong : family , friends, community

5. Contribute : Individual talent that is valued in the world , make a difference

6. Spiritual : ( a false belief , those who truly understand would know the falsehood of ego at play ) Going Beyond self

Agenda of Organisations

1. Maximise Profits and returns for stakeholders ethically

2. Consistently Grow in a profitable way

3. Survive through difficult times

4. Solve a problem in the world

How is this useful ?

Whether it is individuals or organisations they have THEIR OWN AGENDAS.

Yet the interesting part is is to fulfil Your own Agenda , you need to fulfil the Agenda of others – whether individuals or organisations!

It is in this space that VALUE Exchange happens. The question individuals and organisations ask is

“What is the Agenda being fulfilled and what the value they get so what is the value they they are willing to pay for”

Naturally low the perceived value , lower the pay.

Perception is not just the quality and quantity of service and product delivered but a more complex equation of how it is seen in the mind . Perceptions are held in the mind . A label can decide the value . It has to do with emotions. The shoes may come from the same factory but add a label and Value jumps . It’s fulfilling an higher agenda of being seen and liked .

Money is nothing but an exchange measure of the perceived Value delivered .

Where things go wrong is when individuals and organisations focus on personal agendas . No one is interested in YOUR AGENDA.

Do you hear these statements

“I want to grow a million subscribers”

“This year we will make a record sale”

“I want to change the world”

No one is interested in your agenda . Full Stop .

The other place things go wrong is when there is safe play . Playing safe you become a commodity. And commodity will be replaced sooner or later with something or someone cheaper .

When organisations become ‘Me To’ and offer commodities the only way to survive is by offering the lowest price.

The way to Thrive with Your Agenda then is

1. Fulfil the agenda of others – solve a problem for clients , customers , employer , donor

2. Be valuable – Don’t follow the crowd , Stand out , be different, be rare , be authentic

IN THE WORLD OF MEMES AND VIRAL VIDEOS – PR CHANGED

It is a cliche to say PR has changed, we all know that . Internet and smart phones with low data costs changed not only how we consume news and views but what we consume.

Today we use our smart phones for entertainment , education , information, shopping , booking cabs , flights , hotels , food delivery , making payments.. and the list is long . It’s one device that our world revolves around.

And then the pandemic hit us. almost overnight we had to sit at home , locked down . It was this device that saved us , kept us sane , we stayed connected with friends, family , and news around the world .

As the intermediary print media disappeared in the lockdown , the change which was gradual got accelerated. Advertising money moved from print to social media.

The big shifts I have experienced working with clients and also co founding a digital startup that will continue in the future are as follows

1. The Intermediary is less relevant : Earlier organisations would chase media (journalists) , today every organisations can broadcast directly to its audiences. Social media has democratised content production. Anyone can be a broadcaster.

2. Journalists move to organisations: Journalists have a knack for news and storytelling , as jobs become scarce in traditional print media journalists moved to organisations in communications and content writing to tell stories on the digital media.

3. Content becomes Visual : 80% of the traffic online is video content as consumers shift to being entertained on social platforms. Visual storytelling will become greatly in demand in times ahead.

4. Influencers are the new intermediaries : Brands are chasing influencers on social media as they have a fan following which can be leveraged and the association also endorses the brand.

5. 24×7 On the Edge the story of a crisis : As there are advantages of being able to broadcast online there is also the other side , a negative side, in a polarised world news will spread rapidly and can damage the brand overnight . In this scenario reputation management takes a different meaning .

6. Storytelling takes centre stage : Consumers and stakeholders consume content and Brands will become storytellers. Every organisation has stories, stories of the founder , organisation , culture, people , clients and community. The future of PR is storytelling in the digital world.

7. Brands and good : Consumers , clients and employees are increasingly looking at brands to support good in communities . Brands and good will connect with stories of good told in the digital world.

8. Leadership needs to be visible: Leaders need to be visible , vocal and demonstrate character by taking a stand for what is right for their people , clients , community and our planet. Leaders that leverage the social media create a positive brand voice. The social media is also going to be a listening platform for leaders .

9. Leverage social media to build Tribes : Organisations and Brands can build Tribes on social media and engage them . PR is no longer just talking but a two way communication, it is building a community around the brand.

In the very early days of social media I had built an alumni and employees community at a leading Indian IT company on social media . We kept the community engaged with the organisation and it turned out to be the best brand ambassador and PR for the organisation.

I have started seeing many PR agencies aiming to reinvent themselves by training their staff in digital communication but this change is more deeper .

It is a shift that needs understanding of consumer behaviour in the digital world combined with good storytelling.

The digital world offers a level playing field , disruptions can happen overnight. The future is going to be exciting and an adventure for digital PR .

As a communicator I am looking forward to the changes, are you?

WHAT CAN I GET ? WHAT CAN I GIVE ?

“I am getting a better salary , so I want to leave.” Any other reason “No, it’s just the salary, I am happy otherwise.”

I have heard this often in my three decades of career in the corporate world and startups I was a part of.

There is nothing wrong in wanting a higher salary . But I have seen that such individuals don’t go far.

And the reason is the attitude is “what can I get” and this shows up sooner or later.

And I feel it makes sense to let such people go because they will eventually move whenever they find a higher salary somewhere.

And their contribution is transactional.

If you see any successful person in any field you would find that the question they ask is “what can I give , how can I make a difference.”

Money is just a medium of exchange of value . So the real question is “What is the value I am adding in the world.”

And you can best add value if what you do is what you are passionate about , because then it is not work.

When you live by ‘Thank God it is Friday’ you are missing out an opportunity to live life Every Day.

“Thank God it is morning and I want to get off the bed and welcome another beautiful day to make a difference” the shift from “What I can get” to “What can I give” is when you truly live.

You don’t move organisations because you get a pay hike rather move the day you don’t feel like getting out of bed for many days in a row.

It’s not worth just surviving , being part of the 9 to 5 crowd because then you are a commodity. And commodity can be replaced by someone or something cheaper sooner or later.

You have but just one life and it does not make sense to be at the end of life and have regrets of not having lived your passion.

You have a special gift , give your gift to the world, and keep asking “what can I give?” each day in every interaction. Get better each day , add greater value .

In my experience with this attitude in life there is no way the universe will not pay you back. Whatever you do , it does not matter , you will always be in demand . Because you are a artist and you love what you do and it will show up.

FINALLY WE ALL DIE , SO WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF ?

Many times I noticed I would hold back , not take a step to live my dreams , because of fear . “What will happen if “ is the biggest falsehood that kills dreams .

“What will happen if it does not work out ?” and “what will they think?” stops many from taking the steps to live their dreams.

Finally we all die , so if that is given what is the fear that remains ? And no one cares about your life so no point thinking about what others will think.

If life will end one day and no one knows what that day is why not make the best of the time while we live ?

Why not live fully , love fully and leave a legacy?

Make this life a beautiful adventure, enjoy the journey, live all your dreams. There is nothing like being safe remember in the end we all die.

Love fully not only your family and your friends, but include your community, all the plants and animals in our world. A compassionate life heals.

Leave a legacy , contribute your best gifts in the world. It would be a small footprint in time but it would leave a mark.

No point accumulating as you leave everything behind, travel light , it will add to your freedom to live your dreams.

1. Prepare your bucket list of things you wish to do in life . I have mine and I keep ticking off the boxes.

2. Maintain a journal, reflect every day how you have lived and what you are grateful for .

Don’t die with regrets of not having lived your life fully , not having loved fully . Don’t die with your song in your heart .

Begin Now ! No one knows about tomorrow.

I LOST A CLIENT AND THIS IS WHAT I LEARNT

Recently one of my clients backed off just when I thought things were looking up , social media presence was up , engagement was high and now it looked the sales funnel would kick in as we identified the niche and the product offering.

And yet the client backed off , why ? “Don’t have the funds and sales have not yet happened so I am unsure of the future.”

I was disappointed, things were just falling into place and looking up . It had just been three months since we began working on the account and we had even compromised on our fees .

So what did I learn ?

1. WHO : This is the most important question, clearly decide who is your client for the product or service you wish to offer .

In this case even before I took on the client I knew that the budgets were tight and social media needs time to build presence , but I had made the mistake of taking on the business.

Looking back I would rather focus on clients who were in it for the long haul rather than let’s see what happens.

2. EXPECTATIONS : It’s important to set clear expectations . Building a brand on social media is a long term game and if the client was not ready to play for the long run , I could just have avoided taking on the client .

This is also fair for the client as they are clear of what to expect . Being optimist is good but it needs to match reality.

3. LET GO : You could make a mistake in the client you picked up but as soon as you realise that something is not clicking take a quick decision and let go . It saves time and effort for everyone .

Let go of clients ;

1. Who don’t see value and are not willing to pay for the value you add . Better focus on those that see value .

2. Who do not commit to what it takes to succeed . If you are not well and you refuse to take the pill the doctor advised, you cannot blame the doctor. Either convince the client on importance of following the plan and if they yet refuse , just get out.

It is important to FOCUS you have limited time and resources . You cannot be everything to everyone.

I feel It’s a good learning to “LET GO OF BUSINESS/ CLIENTS THAT THAT ARE NOT COMMITTED TO CREATE MUTUAL VALUE.”

YOR TRIBE IS OUT THERE

We all want to belong , we want to be part of a group , we want to be missed , that is why there are tribes everywhere

You don’t build a tribe , it already exists out there , as a leader you have to find and connect with them . I have a special love for animals , I feel the hurt when I see any animal is abused , many times I have picked up animals who are injured from the streets to get them treated , my love for animals extends to my food habits . My wife has a special connect with old people , if she does see any old person on the street she would stop and go out of her way to help , she regularly visits old age homes to spend time with old people .

We both are different in our choice for causes we follow and support.

Don’t waste time to argue

It maybe difficult to convince me support the cause of the elderly , though I do accompany my wife on her trips to the old age home . Similarly it would not help try convince my wife to support animals , though she does visit animal shelters with me.

Yet a lot of time , effort and money is wasted by nonprofits in trying to convince everyone to believe in the cause they believe in. Even within a single cause example supporting underprivileged children there are so many different options.

This also happens in political space I follow a particular ideology , so some of my school friends who have a opposite ideology expend a lot of energy trying to convince me why what I believe is wrong only that it does not work . It is almost impossible , you cannot convert the believers . The marketing spend in trying to convert no believers is wasted , trying to sell Microsoft to Apple fans is difficult if not impossible.

Tribes Everywhere

We all want to belong , we want to be part of a group , we want to be missed , that is why there are tribes everywhere . It is human nature to build connections and belong , there is the family tribe , the religious tribe , the school alumni tribe , the morning walkers , the cyclist , the diabetics , the organisation you work at is a tribe , the coders , the hackers , environment activist , the weight watchers , the vegans , the Starbucks tribe , the bikers , apple users , spiritual buddies , you look around and you will find a tribe. Each one of us belongs to many tribes , religious , political , brand , lifestyle , school , profession , career , organisation , we are all part of many tribes .

Tribe of Fans is not a marketing strategy

Harley Davidson has a fan tribe , when you see them you know . There is a sense of pride to belong to the community , everything the tribe does has a unique language , they way they dress , the tattoos , the attitude , the lifestyle everything is a reflection of the culture of Harley Davidson . When Harley changed from bing a bike company to a community and made it as part of its business strategy not marketing strategy many of its employees became bikers , many of the bikers became its employees . There is ownership of the Brand by the community , the brand did not build the community rather the community strengthened the Brand !

Tribes loves a conflict

It is Us vs Them , Greenpeace takes on the Governments and Corporations in its fight to preserve the planet. An Apple fan is against Microsoft .In India a Patanjali Indian homegrown Ayurvedic desi brand is against the multinational brand HUL (though it is as much Indian as any ) , the followers of Ramdev Baba the yoga guru back the desi , traditional , low cost brand story.

Lead your Tribe or be a part of a Tribe

You have two choices , create a movement or be part of a movement . If you choose to build a movement your Tribe is waiting out there.

MAKE PASSION YOUR WORK OF ART

When you transcend from surviving to thriving , from being safe to jumping off the cliff so you can fly , when you stretch your wings to take to the sky , when you look at your fear in the eye and walk close , when your work is your art , you are alive !

Pinky is a home maker , she took retirement from her job after 30 years of service to pursue her passion for healthy Vegan cooking . She personally had faced many health issues and going on a whole plant based and raw diet helped her heal , when she experienced personal transformation she wanted to share this with the world , she did this through her passion as a vegan chef ,what could be a better way then to teach a new healthy lifestyle to the world. Tribes are built when a leader experiences transformation and wishes to share good with the world.

Pink’y passion was not money but her desire for meaning in life after 30 years of a corporate career , she wanted to heal those who were suffering disease with whole plant based vegan and raw food lifestyle and she started conducting classes to teach her tribe members the way to live this lifestyle. One by one her tribe was getting healed , she was my first client at my digital payments startup for a online payment link , I was helping her with online bookings of her health classes. I found that Pinky experiences joy in sharing the way of a healthy life , she did this with no expectations. Every day she puts out a message on healthy living through a vegan lifestyle for the benefit of her tribe. As her tribe experienced the benefits through her sharing they began to pay her back by attending her workshops. Her passion is valuable to those who wish to heal their body from toxicity of unhealthy living.

Give your Passion

Give your passion to the world without any expectation , not as a strategy , not being clever , do it to experience the joy of making a difference . Puneet Rao is a fitness coach on Instagram he has been sharing his fitness journey and life with his tribe for many years now . During the lockdown he did this everyday as people were at home, he conducted live sessions on home workouts for the benefit of his tribe. Tribe leaders truly care for their tribe , they want to genuinely help and they do this without any expectations . They are out there , giving everyday , make a difference in the world with their passion.

Puneet later announced a batch for those who wanted to take up his deeper session for fitness for the period of lockdown over a thousand fans signed up for his daily live paid sessions.

Add Value , make it valuable

Dr Pramod Tripathi has been sharing his knowledge on reversing diabetes naturally without medicines through his YouTube channel , he spends a lot of time researching on the subject before he puts out anything . He thinks deeply of the problems diabetics face , the doubts they may have . His mission is educating diabetics with facts and helping them heal. His video on “Should Diabetics Fast” is a super hit because it is a grey area and a question many diabetics have he is helping them ease their pain and find freedom from diabetes. His tribe keeps on growing as the energy of his passion is infectious and adds value to his tribe.

Dr Pramod is on a mission to get one lakh diabetics free of medicines and insulin by 2022.

Everyday is an opportunity to spread joy

Those that succeed do so by giving , contributing adding value , you are in this world for a purpose , and your purpose is to make a difference with your unique gift , when you get up everyday with the joy to give your unique talent to the world , it responds back with love . The energy of giving comes back , multiplied.

Puneet Rao shares his fitness sessions daily on Instagram , he has been doing this for many years now and his tribe has grown. They now trust him and have become raving fans. Pinky shares health vegan recipes daily , Dr Pramod shares honest knowledge of diabetes.

You are not born to survive , you are born to thrive with your unique gifts and when you leave this world you would have left behind your unique fragrance .

The connected world helps us to share our gift , to contribute , to solve a problem , to make life a bit better for someone . Its a long haul , there are no short cuts , it takes time to build the tribe. It does not matter what one does , any job can become an opportunity to demonstrate your art as long as you bring passion to your work . The world needs artists not crowds.

Nurture your unique gift

The deeper you get in nurturing your unique gift , the greater the difference you can make , listen , learn , be thirsty for more. Learning never stops , I spend time on reading everyday, reflecting and nurturing my soul . How many hours of practice would a Serena Williams put in her game ? Steve Jobs learnt the art of connecting with his tribes with storytelling at Pixar , he was a master storyteller . There was magic when he would take stage to launch the next apple product , he perfected the art of story over the years.

A painter immerses in his art perfecting the brush strokes , a singer keeps at his practice to master his vocal chords , a musician spends time perfecting the notes , in every field those that succeed devote time to practice their art , get better and keep learning the new that is emerging.

Size of your tribe does not matter

Pinky has a few hundred tribe members , Dr Pramod has thousands , Beatles had millions , it is not the size that matters , what matters is are you adding value and do you feel good doing what you do.

You are an Artist

An artist is in love of his creation , he is obsessed with creating , when he does his art , time stops and Gods love flows through his work. Whatever maybe your work , be an artist , create art , fall in love with your creation , give your best art to the world , not for the likes and awards , not for what you will get in return but because you are born to share your best gift.

When you transcend from surviving to thriving , from being safe to jumping off the cliff so you can fly , when you stretch your wings to take to the sky , when you look at your fear in the eye and walk close , when your work is your art , you are alive !

Live your Passion .

WHAT KILLS PASSION ?

There is no scarcity in the world it you stop competing for attention and waiting for likes . If you have an idea there is a tribe out there , create a movement . Go rock the boat.

As children we have no limitations , we can dream , we can travel places in our imagination , we can speak our mind and then system takes over . We don’t carry any judgements , we dance if we have to , we sing if we have to and then comes ‘No’ , you cannot do this , you cannot have this , you have to follow the rules. You soon get into a race , a race for marks , for grades , for being liked .

Likes kills Passion

‘Like’ is not just a social media button , it is understanding the nature of human psychology of being liked . This begins in childhood , we are told what is liked by the society , we do things to please our parents , our teachers . The good remark on homework , the tick mark is what is appreciated . We learn quickly that we have to be part of the crowd , be like the crowd . Being different is not appreciated , is not encouraged , gets you to be ‘not liked’. I accidentally discovered my passion to enrol an audience to an idea in school elocution competition . I remember one day I was very tense before going up an speaking on stage , the pressure of how the audience would react was very high and then something happened , I just dropped the pressure of audience reaction and said to myself “it’s my time , I am going to have fun” and I had fun . I had discovered a secret “do the thing because you enjoy it, not for the audience reaction”.

Today we put up a post and then go back to check likes , I write this blog and then wait for people to appreciate . Parents have been replaced with bosses , we try to do things to please those above us . We wait to get applauded , for others to tell us we did a fine job . We put up pictures on our social media walls to project an image that we wish the world to see , only because we wish to hear the sound of ‘like’ rather the click of ‘like’.

In the chase of likes we forget what we truly love , we fear ‘not being liked’ , we create a pressure to perform . It is the weight of ‘like’ that kills our real authentic self , our passion.

We don’t want to be lonely , we want to belong , be part of the crowd, and so we confirm , we kill our authentic self , burry our gifts , wait for another day , a day when things would get better and then we would live. That day never comes.

Insecurity stops Life

It’s a big bad world out there we are told and as soon as we get from academic life into the work world we see that we are on our own . People get into jobs because that is the way to earn a living . We earn to live , to pay the bills , to take the vacation , to buy the car , the house , the gadget and show the world we have arrived . We kill our passion our dream our authentic self because standing out , rocking the boat doing our stuff would mean being different . Being different and living our gift seems tough , how would one survive rocking the boat , there are bills to be paid.

Yet look around and see any successful person in any field , they have confronted their fears , the real fear is not that you may get fired or that you may fail at business , the fear is that you could miss life ,surviving . Ask any old person do they have any regrets and they will tell you , it is the regret of not have lived their calling .

Our heart sings when we do what we are born to do when we give our gifts to the world . Insecurity stops us living our calling , it stops life. When you wake up every day and you don’t sing you song , it is a day not lived and before you know it life maybe over.

Drop Scarcity thinking

The thinking that there is not enough for everyone in this world , that only one child can top the class , that there is a bell curve , competing all the time to become like them . You can learn from others but you must live your own life .

If an Ashank Desai can come from a poverty in a village to build a global IT company anyone can do it , Ashank does not have more time of more hands , the only thing is he thinks differently , where you see scarcity he seeks opportunity. When the four co founders of Mastek began their journey with no money to form a software company in 1982 no one was doing that , it was unthinkable , so many would have told them it was foolish idea , they are well educated from the finest institutes of IIT and IIM in India of they must get a job. They decided to listen to their heart instead of their heads.

There is no scarcity in the world it you stop competing for attention and waiting for likes . If you have an idea there is a tribe out there , create a movement . Go rock the boat.

PASSION TO MONEY – 2 (BEGIN)

You have only one life , don’t wait for tomorrow , don’t live a life you don’t love . Begin Now !

Girish Kulkarni started his journey in the social sector accidentally , during his college days he had a friend who never spoke about his family , one day they happened to find out why , his mother was in flesh trade. This shook Girish , he saw the poverty , the utter helplessness of the family . He could not sleep , he decided to do something about this and fight to get women and children out from flesh trade. He gathered a few friends and then began a journey for a cause of freedom and life of dignity for commercial sex workers . Today Snehalaya an NGO run by Girish is a home to over 800 children of commercial sex workers over 400 of them are impacted with AIDS , another NGO Snehankur takes care of infants who are abandoned on the roads by mothers.

How could one man achieve so much , he yet teaches in college . He shared with me the secret one day , he said “I just began and people joined me on the way” .

Get into the water, get wet

Every success story starts with a fire within to change something and the first step is to begin , take that first step . Most people in the place of Girish would look away , leaders in the social sector I have met don’t look away , they get involved . They don’t even care about resources and challenges they may face . Girish had to face the mafia , he was not afraid . So may times you have an idea but you hold back because of fear and the fear is of the unknown .

We all get used to our comfort zones we are told , stay safe , don’t rock the boat , survive . You cannot learn swimming without getting into the water , you cannot ride a cycle by reading books and watch videos on YouTube . You cannot build your passion into business by just thinking . You have to take the step , you need to begin.

They will warn you , its tough , but do it anyway

You will not have all the answers , last year when I began my entrepreneurial journey at the age of 54 after over 30 years in the corporate world I had no idea of what to expect , there was no comfort of monthly paycheque , I was also warned this is not the age (I don’t know what age has got to do with anything). I had to stay flexible , I had something in mind but there is so much I have learned by being open to opportunities .

The places I expected would open doors did not , those I expected support from did not and for this I have nothing against anyone , I had to learn this is the way of the world for an entrepreneur , you are on your own ! this is a solo journey and some times it does get lonely .

There were so many friends who warned me in good faith , “the market is bad , things are tough , it is not easy” , then there was “you are cut out for the corporate world” and it is true I also had all these fears when I began.

But I was passionate about helping those with passion with my 30 plus years of marketing experience , in the past one year I helped a healthcare brand scale 3x , I trained with over 500 NGOs on fundraising with storytelling , I built so many more networks, I have added many more clients . Every day is a new possibility , I have read so much more , I have travelled so much more , I have grown so much more. I have been doing what I call is “blessed work” with some amazing people. I also found a business partner on the way.

I have worked with some highly successful entrepreneurs they all began from zero , Madan Bahal to founder of Adfactors PR which is the largest agency in Asia began with a table space in a shop, when I joined him he had a very small rundown office at fort, Ashank Desai and the Co-Founders of global IT company Mastek began their journey at one of the Co-Founder Ketan’s home , they had no money and were first generation entrepreneurs, I have visited that place with Ashank. Dr Pramod Tripathi who I work with now in healthcare began with supporting just a few people with diabetes reversal with diet , today the team has touched over 50,000 diabetics with a team of over 100.

The reason to begin now is simple

  1. You are given your gift to share with the world
  2. Your heart beats when you sing your song , share your gift
  3. Don’t die with your song in your heart

You have only one life , don’t wait for tomorrow , don’t live a life you don’t love . Begin Now !
