DON’T TAKE THIS DAY FOR GRANTED

Last year this time on this day of new year 2020 I was at a party with my wife. There was some news about lockdown in a far off place in China . No one in their wildest dreams could have predicted what was to follow.

The world came to a halt , literally , everything stopped as the pandemic spread.

Lives were being lost , the was economic gloom , so many business suffered , people lost their jobs , there was panic across the world.

I had been postponing plans to travel the world and now there was no chance of travel.

During this period I lost my school friend and my mentor. So much changed .

The one big lesson of 2020 is don’t take life for granted. Life can change in a moment . It changed for many families who lost their loved ones in the pandemic and for the countless many who lost their jobs and incomes , who yet struggle every day.

Life changed for the family of my friend who died not out of COVID but due to sudden cardiac arrest. Till the night he passed away he was in touch and in good health then the next day he was gone.

Don’t postpone your dreams , don’t die with your song in your heart , you have but only one life , don’t take it for granted.

Living , loving and leaving a legacy behind is what life is about .

Life is not about playing safe , not living , postponing life to the future. It would be stupid , you cannot be sure of tomorrow.

The heavy baggage of what will happen in the future has stopped many from living now and playing safe . Yet the only certainty of the future is that it is uncertain.

2021 is another adventure that begins today , I do not know how this year will unfold but as I type these words I know this moment I am sharing my gift and that is all that matters .

REFLECTING ON 2020

2020 has been a year like none before, a year when the world stopped. There are a few things I learnt that I cannot forget.

1. THE UNIMAGINABLE CAN AND WILL HAPPEN : No one could have ever predicted that the world will grind to a halt.

One cannot control external events in life one can control how one responds to those events.

2. HUMANS CAN ADAPT SOON : The world quickly adapted to the new normal and moved digital. Non essential consumption stopped overnight.

Be flexible, this is going to happen often in the future, entire industries and jobs would get disrupted. One cannot hold on to Ego of the past and not change.

3. WE CAN SURVIVE WITH A LOT LESS : That I could do without buying anything other than essentials for months was a revelation , it was clear that I needed a lot less to survive.

Often we land up buying things we do not need and then stock them to use at some later date . Clutter is stuck energy.

4. CUTTING OUT DAILY COMMUTE SAVED TIME : Locked down travel stopped completely, this resulted in excess time on hand , while some struggled some made best use of the time to self develop.

Cut all non essential travel , it also helps our planet.

5. THERE WAS NO OPTION OTHER THAN GOING DIGITAL : Even those that were reluctant were now forced to go digital. This is a trend that will continue.

Reinvent, Reinvent , Reinvent .

6. REMOTE WORKING WORKS : That I could service clients from across the world has been a plus . All organisations other than those that need physical presence have adapted to remote work.

Interesting thing I notice is that where innovation is needed and deep collaboration is called for teams have started coming together again while the bigger organisations that have process driven work continue remote work.

If you can move to smaller towns with great views , quality of life matters .

8. MORE ME TIME : The time saved on travel did give me lot more time to be with self and reflect , read books , meditate.

Build an inner practice for calm in turbulent times .

Here are a few more tips on things I will follow .

1. Build a contingency fund for emergencies , one cannot predict events that may occur but one can build a reserve that protects against shocks.

So I plan to build a contingency fund besides two years survival fund aside. Before I spend income I will save for contingency, this is the essential.

2. Cut down the non discretionary spends and focus on what is truly important . I have been fascinated by minimalist lifestyle and now I even know it is possible.

3. Invest on experiences, travel places , explore the world post the vaccination. It was something I had postponed , won’t do that again. And travel can be low budget .

4. Make my bucket list of things to do and tick off each one . Life is uncertain don’t wish to die with incomplete dreams.

5. Don’t take life for granted , live every day fully . This is the most important lesson of the pandemic. Live , Love, Leave a Legacy behind.

6. Build inner resilience it is a must , faith , surrender, prayer , meditation are practices I will continue.

7. Keep reinventing and learning new things daily and always be ready for the new world. This is a habit I will never stop.

Finally don’t take life toooo seriously!

I LOST A CLIENT AND THIS IS WHAT I LEARNT

Recently one of my clients backed off just when I thought things were looking up , social media presence was up , engagement was high and now it looked the sales funnel would kick in as we identified the niche and the product offering.

And yet the client backed off , why ? “Don’t have the funds and sales have not yet happened so I am unsure of the future.”

I was disappointed, things were just falling into place and looking up . It had just been three months since we began working on the account and we had even compromised on our fees .

So what did I learn ?

1. WHO : This is the most important question, clearly decide who is your client for the product or service you wish to offer .

In this case even before I took on the client I knew that the budgets were tight and social media needs time to build presence , but I had made the mistake of taking on the business.

Looking back I would rather focus on clients who were in it for the long haul rather than let’s see what happens.

2. EXPECTATIONS : It’s important to set clear expectations . Building a brand on social media is a long term game and if the client was not ready to play for the long run , I could just have avoided taking on the client .

This is also fair for the client as they are clear of what to expect . Being optimist is good but it needs to match reality.

3. LET GO : You could make a mistake in the client you picked up but as soon as you realise that something is not clicking take a quick decision and let go . It saves time and effort for everyone .

Let go of clients ;

1. Who don’t see value and are not willing to pay for the value you add . Better focus on those that see value .

2. Who do not commit to what it takes to succeed . If you are not well and you refuse to take the pill the doctor advised, you cannot blame the doctor. Either convince the client on importance of following the plan and if they yet refuse , just get out.

It is important to FOCUS you have limited time and resources . You cannot be everything to everyone.

I feel It’s a good learning to “LET GO OF BUSINESS/ CLIENTS THAT THAT ARE NOT COMMITTED TO CREATE MUTUAL VALUE.”

WHAT STOPS FROM DOING WHAT WE LOVE

The fear of unknown is real . Look at the graves , you find worlds greatest treasures buried , dreams that were not lived due to fear .

Look at a child , you find no fear , dancing, jumping , shouting, all the stuff that kids do and are not ok for us to do as adults .

Who made these rules ? The NO has killed many more dreams than anything else in our world. The “No you cannot do this” , “No you cannot have that” , “No you are not good enough .”

And this is filled with , “you Must do this”, “You must stand first” , “You must win”, “You need to have a big house and a bigger car” . Then there is comparison, “look at your friend , he has topped the class and you ?”

Then we have idols , those that we see up there , in every magazine we see their pictures, they have made it , you see their lifestyle and wish you could be like them.

We pick up a job , get into a loan for that dream house , the car . Now we are trapped , bills need to be paid . The dream has been forgotten for more important things need to be done like , living life , climbing the ladder , paying the bills , getting famous .

Now the fear is real , we cannot do what we love because we need to keep up , follow the dream of the crowd . So we never ever break free because now SURVIVING is important.

Finally you find most of the beautiful dreams buried under the graveyard.

I believe no one must die with their song in their heart. We have but one life , we must Live it .

Love what you do till you find what you love to do. But for that don’t get trapped in the dream of the crowd and drop the fear . You have nothing to lose .

ASK THE QUESTION WHY

One of my clients had set a goal in mind , to get a million followers in a defined period. And I told him that is the wrong place to begin.

Why do we do anything , why do we exist , what is the purpose of it all , these are mans deepest questions . Business or career is not distinct from life , it is part of life , it is where we spend most of our time of waking hours once we get past school and college. Yet we see them as distinct compartments. I see life progress in three stages .

If I look back at my own life the three stages I experienced are :

1. Clean Slate : The early years of life are like a clean slate . Nothing is written , and then impressions are formed , by parents , by family , by society , by the education system . What was a clean slate full of possibilities , gets restricted , the open space shrinks . We get defined , what we can do , what we cannot do , what is possible , what is not possible .

The school , the college , everything defines us , we have to be hammered with education and information to fit in , to be part of the crowd. The clean slate slowly gets filled up , possibilities and dreams are killed.

2. The World : We are told now its time to get serious . Till a stage in life we are sheltered by our parents and then we suddenly go out into the world . The period of learning at school and college is over , now we are told yo enter the real world . Finding a career , making money and then more money , running after fame and power , looking for approval .

This is the phase of being on a treadmill that does not have a stop button.

3. Before the End : At some stage the realisation sets in that the pursuit of happiness is an illusion that is shattered by death. We know that all this life as we know it will end some day , we look back at memories . Studies of people at end of life have found that one of the things that most people regret is not having lived their life fully , not having taken the risks , they played safe and chose to follow the crowd .

We see it and yet we do not see it. Before we know the game is over. It’s too late .

So why am I sharing this in #passionproject , because I feel we need to wake up . We do not have unlimited time on the planet earth, we are travellers here . Asking the deeper questions adds meaning to life , to everyday , it is the reason why we wake up every morning.

FREEDOM : When I peel down the layers I find that the deepest desire we all have is for freedom , freedom to live life on our own terms , freedom to find and live expression for our unique gifts , freedom to live from possibility .

CONTRIBUTION : Before we leave this planet , did we make any difference , we were all born with a unique gift . Did we contribute with our gifts ? Did we sing our song .

PASSION : What is that one thing that we are passionate about , that does not feel like work , that we can keep doing whether it is a weekend or a weekday. If we focus on our passion and become the best at something, not in comparison to others but simply perfect our art whatever that maybe we will be deeply fulfilled.

When everyone is running on a treadmill, it is important to pause , get off the treadmill, step back and ask the deeper questions . Don’t just live , but live a meaningful life. You don’t begin with aiming for a number, you begin with asking “Am I singing my song ? and am I having fun on the journey?”

YOR TRIBE IS OUT THERE

We all want to belong , we want to be part of a group , we want to be missed , that is why there are tribes everywhere

You don’t build a tribe , it already exists out there , as a leader you have to find and connect with them . I have a special love for animals , I feel the hurt when I see any animal is abused , many times I have picked up animals who are injured from the streets to get them treated , my love for animals extends to my food habits . My wife has a special connect with old people , if she does see any old person on the street she would stop and go out of her way to help , she regularly visits old age homes to spend time with old people .

We both are different in our choice for causes we follow and support.

Don’t waste time to argue

It maybe difficult to convince me support the cause of the elderly , though I do accompany my wife on her trips to the old age home . Similarly it would not help try convince my wife to support animals , though she does visit animal shelters with me.

Yet a lot of time , effort and money is wasted by nonprofits in trying to convince everyone to believe in the cause they believe in. Even within a single cause example supporting underprivileged children there are so many different options.

This also happens in political space I follow a particular ideology , so some of my school friends who have a opposite ideology expend a lot of energy trying to convince me why what I believe is wrong only that it does not work . It is almost impossible , you cannot convert the believers . The marketing spend in trying to convert no believers is wasted , trying to sell Microsoft to Apple fans is difficult if not impossible.

Tribes Everywhere

We all want to belong , we want to be part of a group , we want to be missed , that is why there are tribes everywhere . It is human nature to build connections and belong , there is the family tribe , the religious tribe , the school alumni tribe , the morning walkers , the cyclist , the diabetics , the organisation you work at is a tribe , the coders , the hackers , environment activist , the weight watchers , the vegans , the Starbucks tribe , the bikers , apple users , spiritual buddies , you look around and you will find a tribe. Each one of us belongs to many tribes , religious , political , brand , lifestyle , school , profession , career , organisation , we are all part of many tribes .

Tribe of Fans is not a marketing strategy

Harley Davidson has a fan tribe , when you see them you know . There is a sense of pride to belong to the community , everything the tribe does has a unique language , they way they dress , the tattoos , the attitude , the lifestyle everything is a reflection of the culture of Harley Davidson . When Harley changed from bing a bike company to a community and made it as part of its business strategy not marketing strategy many of its employees became bikers , many of the bikers became its employees . There is ownership of the Brand by the community , the brand did not build the community rather the community strengthened the Brand !

Tribes loves a conflict

It is Us vs Them , Greenpeace takes on the Governments and Corporations in its fight to preserve the planet. An Apple fan is against Microsoft .In India a Patanjali Indian homegrown Ayurvedic desi brand is against the multinational brand HUL (though it is as much Indian as any ) , the followers of Ramdev Baba the yoga guru back the desi , traditional , low cost brand story.

Lead your Tribe or be a part of a Tribe

You have two choices , create a movement or be part of a movement . If you choose to build a movement your Tribe is waiting out there.

MAKE PASSION YOUR WORK OF ART

When you transcend from surviving to thriving , from being safe to jumping off the cliff so you can fly , when you stretch your wings to take to the sky , when you look at your fear in the eye and walk close , when your work is your art , you are alive !

Pinky is a home maker , she took retirement from her job after 30 years of service to pursue her passion for healthy Vegan cooking . She personally had faced many health issues and going on a whole plant based and raw diet helped her heal , when she experienced personal transformation she wanted to share this with the world , she did this through her passion as a vegan chef ,what could be a better way then to teach a new healthy lifestyle to the world. Tribes are built when a leader experiences transformation and wishes to share good with the world.

Pink’y passion was not money but her desire for meaning in life after 30 years of a corporate career , she wanted to heal those who were suffering disease with whole plant based vegan and raw food lifestyle and she started conducting classes to teach her tribe members the way to live this lifestyle. One by one her tribe was getting healed , she was my first client at my digital payments startup for a online payment link , I was helping her with online bookings of her health classes. I found that Pinky experiences joy in sharing the way of a healthy life , she did this with no expectations. Every day she puts out a message on healthy living through a vegan lifestyle for the benefit of her tribe. As her tribe experienced the benefits through her sharing they began to pay her back by attending her workshops. Her passion is valuable to those who wish to heal their body from toxicity of unhealthy living.

Give your Passion

Give your passion to the world without any expectation , not as a strategy , not being clever , do it to experience the joy of making a difference . Puneet Rao is a fitness coach on Instagram he has been sharing his fitness journey and life with his tribe for many years now . During the lockdown he did this everyday as people were at home, he conducted live sessions on home workouts for the benefit of his tribe. Tribe leaders truly care for their tribe , they want to genuinely help and they do this without any expectations . They are out there , giving everyday , make a difference in the world with their passion.

Puneet later announced a batch for those who wanted to take up his deeper session for fitness for the period of lockdown over a thousand fans signed up for his daily live paid sessions.

Add Value , make it valuable

Dr Pramod Tripathi has been sharing his knowledge on reversing diabetes naturally without medicines through his YouTube channel , he spends a lot of time researching on the subject before he puts out anything . He thinks deeply of the problems diabetics face , the doubts they may have . His mission is educating diabetics with facts and helping them heal. His video on “Should Diabetics Fast” is a super hit because it is a grey area and a question many diabetics have he is helping them ease their pain and find freedom from diabetes. His tribe keeps on growing as the energy of his passion is infectious and adds value to his tribe.

Dr Pramod is on a mission to get one lakh diabetics free of medicines and insulin by 2022.

Everyday is an opportunity to spread joy

Those that succeed do so by giving , contributing adding value , you are in this world for a purpose , and your purpose is to make a difference with your unique gift , when you get up everyday with the joy to give your unique talent to the world , it responds back with love . The energy of giving comes back , multiplied.

Puneet Rao shares his fitness sessions daily on Instagram , he has been doing this for many years now and his tribe has grown. They now trust him and have become raving fans. Pinky shares health vegan recipes daily , Dr Pramod shares honest knowledge of diabetes.

You are not born to survive , you are born to thrive with your unique gifts and when you leave this world you would have left behind your unique fragrance .

The connected world helps us to share our gift , to contribute , to solve a problem , to make life a bit better for someone . Its a long haul , there are no short cuts , it takes time to build the tribe. It does not matter what one does , any job can become an opportunity to demonstrate your art as long as you bring passion to your work . The world needs artists not crowds.

Nurture your unique gift

The deeper you get in nurturing your unique gift , the greater the difference you can make , listen , learn , be thirsty for more. Learning never stops , I spend time on reading everyday, reflecting and nurturing my soul . How many hours of practice would a Serena Williams put in her game ? Steve Jobs learnt the art of connecting with his tribes with storytelling at Pixar , he was a master storyteller . There was magic when he would take stage to launch the next apple product , he perfected the art of story over the years.

A painter immerses in his art perfecting the brush strokes , a singer keeps at his practice to master his vocal chords , a musician spends time perfecting the notes , in every field those that succeed devote time to practice their art , get better and keep learning the new that is emerging.

Size of your tribe does not matter

Pinky has a few hundred tribe members , Dr Pramod has thousands , Beatles had millions , it is not the size that matters , what matters is are you adding value and do you feel good doing what you do.

You are an Artist

An artist is in love of his creation , he is obsessed with creating , when he does his art , time stops and Gods love flows through his work. Whatever maybe your work , be an artist , create art , fall in love with your creation , give your best art to the world , not for the likes and awards , not for what you will get in return but because you are born to share your best gift.

BUILD YOUR TRIBE

One man or a woman can change the world , begin a movement , build a tribe . Begin Now !

You have an ‘idea’ , ‘product’ or a ’cause’ you are passionate about , ask the next question who is your tribe ? In the 1980’s Beatles created a different kind of counterculture music rooted in skiffle , beat and 1950’s rock and roll , their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop. The group revolutionised many aspects of music industry and were often publicised leaders of the era’s youth and sociocultural movement .

They changed the game and built their tribe , rather the tribe already existed , the youth who believed in counterculture , they provided the leadership to connect the tribe with different kind of music.

Facebook recently launched its Facebook shop to help small businesses to set up their digital stores and get found on social media . I had an idea on similar lines a few years back ,as a Co-Founder of a digital payments startup I built a social commerce platform on top of the digital payments solution , it was an end-to end solution from setting up a digital store to checkouts and digital payments . The idea was as simple as click-share-sell .

One of the first customers to the platform was Nainital Bikers , who as the name suggests was into bike rental business in Nainital a scenic tourist location . He had a big challenge of getting travellers to book his bikes and make the payment before they travelled , many times they would call and book the bike but then if they did not travel , he would end up making a loss of day in and rental revenue . He came to know of our service through a story we had shared on Facebook. Nainital Bikers was the representative of our tribe , small business owners across small towns of India who wanted to expand beyond their geography and were looking for an end to end solution to quickly put up their online store and get bookings and payments online . The tribe for the solution we were building was out there we had to reach them .

Know the persona of your tribe

One of my clients is in healthcare , I spent a lot of time initially meeting the existing customers , listening to their stories , understanding their pain point and more importantly observing things they said and also did not say . This is one of the qualities I learnt early in my career as a marketeer and it ‘Empathy’ , I would get into the shoes of my clients and feel their pain .I have been told I am highly anecdotal , I gather stories . I feel this is an important trait for anyone in marketing or for that matter in business , one needs to have the ability of keen observation and story listening.

Even if you are leading a cause you have your tribe , those that believe in your cause . PAWS is a small charity organisation run by Nilesh Bange, he runs his NGO with volunteers from campuses , he does this by reaching out to those who have soft corner for animals , similarly he has managed to get celebrities who care for animals associate with his cause . He does not have big budgets but he is very smart with identifying his tribe and connecting them with his cause.

Know who is not your tribe

One of the biggest mistakes businesses do is include everyone into their definition of tribe . Coming back to the example of the healthcare client it was clear that our tribe needed to be well educated as some of the concepts covered in the program that needed to be followed required deeper understanding of the principles, so we dropped those who did not meet the qualifier as our tribe. We would have wasted marketing effort on someone who would finally not pick up the service and if they did , would not be a satisfied clients.

For Nilesh who runs PAWS it would be wasted effort to try and enrol those who are passionate about the cause of environment or children education , he would rather focus on engaging his crowd of animal lovers.

Focus

Your business cannot be everything to everybody , it is highly inefficient , yet initially it seems difficult to say no and this can be one big mistake that gets you off track in building your tribe . Yet this is the most important thing to do , stay focused. The healthcare client I worked with did this thing brilliant right, they focused on the diabetes segment and worked on constant innovation and improvements in supporting lifestyle changes and medical support to patients , though the end result was also weight loss for many and that too is a big segment , the focus was never lost , it stayed sharply focused on diabetes. This allowed the team to master a narrow niche and carve out brand reputation as being experts .

Also the client had multiple programs aimed for the same segment this too was streamlined . What do you stand for and what you offer has to be a narrow focus. This also allows for sharper communication and targeting on social media.

There is a temptation to keep adding the list of services , this defuses the idea of a tribe. Also it does not help build sharp mastery of the subject.

Add value

In the passion economy your passion is the value you add and you need to be good at your game . If you are not adding value , you are not valuable. Your passion must add value to your tribe for you to build your tribe. The Doctor I work with in healthcare is passionate for getting patients off medicines by following a healthy lifestyle and he puts out a lot of valuable educational content free on his YouTube channel. Few of my friends are passionate life coaches who freely share knowledge that would help their tribe and they have been doing this for years . One of them has built a strong following on Linkedin, one of them who is in fitness has built good number of fans on Instagram.

From a sales perspective this could be seen as a funnel , starting with free offer , leading to small paid trial and then subscription or purchase .

How would this work for a cause ? There seems an imbalance between the giver an receiver as if the giver is on a higher pedestal , but if you connect with those who identify with your cause the engagement adds value to their soul. they want to be associated with the cause as it nurtures them . I have also found that volunteering for a cause develops leadership skills in people . If you ever face depression or anxiety one of the best ways to find perspective is to engage with those that are going through challenge , the experience can change you.

1000 Raving fans

There is another model one can work on and that is of 1000 raving fans. If you have been regularly adding value you could build 1000 raving fans , this is not an exact number but it gives you a order of magnitude . You don’t need millions of followers to succeed at what you do, it is fine to build a tribe of 1000 raving fans . This is a different way to build business , you need to work more deeply and add value to 1000 individuals. It is these 1000 fans who could subscribe to your service paying a substantial fees worth your time or become your core volunteers to spread your idea . But be sure these are fans who you engage and add deeper value.

Spiritual tribes understand this well , there is an inner circle , those that are close to the Guru , the students who believe it is their duty to spread the word .I had seen some employees in organisations I worked in give up their comfortable jobs and careers to support such spiritual tribes , they were completely convinced about the work and became champions for the teachings and adding tribe members.

Be Authentic

Your differentiator is you , if you are in a crowded market place where there are hundreds who offer the service you offer , you need to be authentic and find your niche . Don’t try to copy , build your style , do something that is different , that is you , that comes from your passion , find your unique niche . Don’t chase money , chase your passion , add value , be authentic , build your niche, money will follow.

One Man can change the world

So can a woman , a tribe is a movement , the movement could be getting people live a healthier lifestyle , listen to a different kind of music , run marathons after 60 , live an abundant life , drop materialism and simplify life with minimalism, become financially free with value investing , make everyday giving an habit , volunteer to teach , live their passion .

Don’t chase money add value to your tribe every day. You need to be persistent, tribes are not built overnight , you need to be out there consistently adding value , learning , improving , making a difference to your tribe.

Yes , one man or a woman can change the world , begin a movement , build a tribe . Begin Now !

CONVERT YOUR PASSION TO MONEY – 1

There is a term TGIF (Thank God It is Friday) which is very popular , many employees wait for the weekend to live their lives !What is it that has been missed ? Why would so many people trade their lives to do what they are not passionate about ?

The singers , the artists , the teachers , the coaches , the wellness experts , the happiness coaches , the bakers , the chefs , the fitness experts , the doctors , the designers , the hackers , the coders , the mind readers , the motivational speakers , the storytellers , the stand up comedians , the photographers , the models , the entrepreneurs , the affiliate marketeers , everyone who is part of the passion economy. this is your time to live your passion . My favourite line has been “Don’t die with your song in your heart.” .

In my corporate career spanning over three decades I have spoken to many employees who were doing what they didn’t love just for the paycheque. Every year Gallup employee engagement studies that shows roughly 50 % of the employees are not engaged with their work and around 20% are actively disengaged . There is a term TGIF (Thank God It is Friday) which was very popular , many would wait for the weekend to live their lives !

What was being missed ? Why would so many employees trade their lives to do what they were not passionate about ?

Till COVID 19 happened , suddenly many individuals lost their safe jobs , there are pay cuts and there is uncertainty . The future of jobs could be contracts , where you get paid for what you deliver, this gives organisations flexibility to get the best talent for job at hand.

For passionprenuers the post COVID world is a golden opportunity to shine in a globally connected world . The world needs a lot more passion , people who bring passion to their work , those who are artists , who go beyond to make a difference , those who are out there to change the world with their contribution.

Don’t follow the Crowd , make your path !

It all begins as school , we are told what the crowd does must be right . In school I loved getting up on stage and speaking to an audience , I won numerous public speaking competitions . I loved to share ideas and stories that would grab the attention of audiences. I was a avid reader and a dreamer , My favourite subject was history , I would not just read history , I would get inside history , visit the times in my imagination , feel the emotions of characters in the history books . I top scored in History in the state examinations.

Yet when it was time for choosing my stream for my career after school I chose what the crowd did , I picked up the science stream as it was most sought after and then I failed . I switched into commerce which again I did because that was the next obvious choice and after graduating my first job was in accounts and I hated it , I quit within a month . At heart I was a storyteller who could get into a story and wow my audiences to become a part of the story . I found my calling in sales and marketing , since then I have been storytelling for over 30 years.

Follow the crowd has been built into our subconscious mind both by the society and parents also our education system believes in grading children . Disengagement begins when we follow what the crowd does and not our heart.

If you are not passionate , don’t begin

Each one of us is born with a unique gift, yet we forget our gift . My son Mayank made a short film in school using his mobile phone , I could see he too was a storyteller . He would click pictures that would tell a story. He chose what he wanted to do in life very early , he chose his college education in mass media , on his own he learnt the tricks of photography and he is a artist who specialises in fashion photography .

All I did was not get in the way and support his decisions . He would do collaboration shoots free , he worked with the best photographers in the business for free . I once asked him why he does that , his answer was “I am getting to learn from the best free of cost”. He had more short term lucrative choices even in photography but he stuck to fashion , like wedding shoots were easy money , yet he was focused on his passion . He stayed focused , his work has been featured in leading fashion magazines and just few months back he did a shoot with an Indian film actress, model and the winner of Miss India international title , Esha Gupta . Myank is happy because he is following his passion for fashion photography , he can be at shoots from early morning to late nights , he is never feels exhausted or stressed . He loves to do a shoot on any day including a Sunday , there is no TGIF and he is not chasing money , he is chasing good work , money comes . I didn’t teach Mayank marketing , his passion reflected in his work and his work got him word of mouth business.

In any field those that succeed are highly passionate about what they do and I have worked many passionate individuals and entrepreneurs so I know . And it is not just about making more money , I have seen passion in founders of all non profits I have worked with for their cause . You cannot lead for a cause if you are not passionate , Dr Ashish Satav serves the poorest of poor in Melghat , he was so passionate about serving the poor tribals that during college in minus temperatures he would bathe in cold water to get himself acclimatised to working in tough conditions.

The biggest risk is playing safe

“The monthly paycheque is comforting , besides I have responsibilities , so why take risk ?” is the answer I get from some I speak to. The is another answer “I will begin later after I have saved enough .” Nothing wrong with these answers and one has a choice to live the way one wishes to.

What one needs to get is that paycheque comes only when you add value to business and to that extent you are in business even if you consider yourself to be in the safety of a job. And you will find you are a safe player you cannot go far , being one of the crowd , not standing out , playing safe , is risky , in business also in a job . If you are a commodity you could be replaced sooner than later.

You need to rock the boat , stand out , make a difference , be counted . Also remember you have only one life and as I said my favourite line is “don’t die with your song in your heart.” . The biggest regret people have in their old age is regret of not living their passion , It is risky to play safe.

My school friend Huzefa who is a serial startup founder tells me that in silicon valley “failure is considered as a batch of honour”. He says that his failures were his biggest teachers. Every startup is a risk , its a bet on the future many of them fail yet even in failure there is learning . I was part of startup ideas that were ahead of times , yet from each I learnt something that helped me become better at my game. So take risks , rock the boat , you have but one life.

The world is waiting for you , begin with passion

The biggest advantage for passionprenuers is that the world is ready for the passion economy , the internet , the smart phone and low data cost now make it possible for you to reach your tribes anywhere in the world. Anyone today who has passion and an idea he or she believes in you can find your tribe on the internet . It needs persistence but the time is right . Post COVID there would be an acceleration of businesses going online as customers are going to spend more time on the net .

You need to have the passion for what you are doing , if you believe in going vegan helps individuals to heal diabetes , you need to be vegan , if you believe that stress can be healed through meditation , you need to practice meditation, if you believe yoga can make an individual fit you need to be a Yoga practitioner yourself. If you are in a job , find passion in what you do , go beyond , take risks.

You need a back story , why are you doing what you are doing and you need to be passionate about whatever you do.

TRIBE OF RAVING FANS

The Tribe already exists out there , they just need a leader who connects them.

The earliest that I remember I heard of a spiritual Tribe was of the controversial mystic Osho . This was the period of hippie culture , the rebels , those that did not fit in with the crowd . I was in college at that time , I heard a few of his talks , he challenged organised religion and politics .

Osho Challenges the Status Quo

I have had a fascination for spiritual tribes and I have observed them closely , I am not talking about religion but spirituality . Osho challenged the status quo and he was the most controversial of them , Rajneesh or Osho as he was later called even criticised Mahatma Gandhi who was highly respected and the orthodoxy of mainstream religions. In advocating a more open attitude he caused controversy wherever he went. His teachings were interspersed with jokes , he delighted in engaging in behaviour that seemed entirely at odds with traditional images of enlightened individuals . He shocked and challenged the norm with his way of spiritual nirvana.

Tribes challenge the status Quo.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar spreads the Art of living

Sri Sri founded the Art of Living ,initiated a series of practical and experiential courses in spirituality around the globe . He says that rhythmic breathing practice, Sudarshan Kriya , came to him during a silent 10 days meditation. The thing to note about Sri Sri is the committed Tribe of Art of Living . The entire organisation of Art of Living and its courses are run by volunteers , they are firm believers in the teachings of Gurudev as he is fondly called by the tribe. I have witnessed professionals giving up their careers to join AOL . The AOL tribe feels it is their responsibility to spread the message and get other members to join in .

Tribes spread the word and get other tribe members to join in.The tribe grows.

Ramana Maharishi asks “who am I”

At the age of 16 , he had a “death-experience” where he became aware of a “current” or “force” which he recognised as his true “I” . He attracted devotees who came to him for darshan(visit) at his ashram . His main teaching was ‘atma-vichar’ (self inquiry ) on “I-thought” . Advita is a doctrine of Non-duality , Ramana Maharishi “secularised” and “modernised” Advita . The tribe of Advita followers already existed , those that were attracted to deeper teachings of the eastern spiritual practices . Against a global outwards focused world there was a tribe that wanted to explore deeper purpose existence.

Yoga rules the world

Yoga is a group of physical , mental , and spiritual practices that originated and spread across the world , it is the Sanskrit word for union. Patanjali is often considered the father of yoga. Most people credit Swami Vivekanda with being America’s introduction to yoga with his address at the world Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893 . He travelled across the states lecturing and teaching yoga to eager students . Then it was in 1920 the Paramhansa Yogananda who spread the message of kriya yoga to the West. There have been other Yoga gurus who spread their idea of Yoga to the west and made it popular globally .

A leader is needed to connect the Tribe to the idea

Jay Shetty makes spirituality Digital

Jay Shetty is a British Indian Internet personality , former monk and motivational speaker . He spent his time as a monk studying behavioural science and learning more about the human mind. Shetty turned to videos on the internet and found a ray of hope . He hit two billion views in 18 months !

Jay challenges the idea of a traditional spiritual Monk , there is a audience that seeks connection with a spiritual teacher , who is not like a ‘Guru’ but like one of them a guy next door , they relate with him .

You don’t build Tribes they already exists out there , they just need a leader who connects them.
